Correlation means two variables move together (ad spend and sales both increase, for example). Causation means one directly influences the other. Distinguishing between them is foundational to good measurement. MMMs infer causality statistically, while incrementality tests establish it experimentally. Without this distinction, marketers risk optimizing toward channels that merely correlate with conversions rather than the ones that actually drive them.
